Respite

Respite care, and taking a break without the guilt

Short stays exist so family carers can rest, recover, or travel. How they work and what is included.

Family carers are the least likely people to ask for help and the most likely to need it. Respite care exists so the arrangement at home can continue, rather than collapse.

How a short stay works

A respite stay is agreed in advance for a set length of time. The person coming in receives exactly the same daily care as a long-term resident: help with washing and dressing, meals, medication, and company. It is the same home, for a shorter period.

What it is useful for
  • Recovering from your own surgery or illness

  • A holiday, a wedding, or a family commitment

  • Simply resting, before exhaustion makes the decision for you

Every respite stay still begins with an assessment, so nobody arrives at a home that cannot manage their needs.

Worth remembering

Asking for a break is not a failure of care. It is usually what makes the care sustainable.
